World of Warcraft – Mass Exodus has Blizzard Worried (Yahoo! Story)

Just got done reading this article about World of Warcraft over on Yahoo. While they still have a very large player base, to lose 1.3 million (this is not a typo) in just three months is pretty rough. Could this be the end of the subscription based king of MMOs? Who knows. I was just saying not too long ago that I was downloading the latest WOW patch so I could play again if I wanted. Scarlet Blade has turned into a real disappointment for me so at this point the only thing I have to look forward to is May 21st when Star Trek Online launches their expansion. Hopefully they will not disappoint. You can check out the story here!

Scarlet Blade – Missing Items and Characters

Here is a reponse I shared on Facebook about Scarlet Blade and the issue of items mysteriously disappearing from the game.

I’d heard inklings of this for longer than 2 weeks. I haven’t been on very much at all the last 3-4 weeks, but even before that people were saying things like gold and items would just vanish. I did hear one person saying they had filed a ticket because one of their high level characters was just gone. It seems that Aeria is having major problems here. I feel for the player base because some of them have spent several hundred dollars on the game only to have their items disappear. It makes me feel better about my decision to not spend any money whatsoever on this game. This shows yet another major issue with spending real money on virtual items. What’s to say someone hasn’t dumped $200 on one of those dumb outfits only to have their character disappear? At least if I spend a couple hundred dollars on something like a…Kindle Fire, chances are if I get tired of it in a month or two, I can always resell it and get at least some of my money back on it. If you complain long and hard to Amazon, they may even give you a full refund. I seriously doubt Aeria is even thinking about issuing refunds to some of its player base. That would be the right thing to do, but I don’t see it happening. If I may quote George Carlin (paraphrasing here), “The person who coined the phrase ‘Let the buyer beware’ was probably bleeding from the ***hole.”

Here is a link to their response about the missing items and what they are doing to try and remedy it.

Scarlet Blade – Getting Suckered In (NSFW, Nudity)

A man named David Hannum once said the famous line “There is a sucker born every minute.” Throughout my life, this has been proven to me time and time again. Interestingly enough, as educated as we have all become and with as much warning as we all get from various sources about this and that, people are still suckered into spending money or buying a product that is anything but useful. The same can be said for many of the items available from Aeria Games for their game (if you want to call it that) Scarlet Blade.

As time has gone on, it’s been made very clear to me and many others that the game itself lacks any real substance. People often attribute the dullness of the game to the MMO genre. To this, I must disagree. While playing World of Warcraft (Yes, I am using the gold standard again), it was rare that I found myself as bored as I am with this game. I admit I did eventually grow tired of WOW which is why I quit. My quitting for some proves that WOW is the same. I beg to differ. While I am getting extraordinarily bored with Scarlet Blade just a handful of weeks after it’s release, it took several years for me to get bored with Warcraft. That is a massive difference. I started playing all the way back in 2005 and I quit playing back in September of 2012. 7 years vs a few weeks is hardly the same thing. While I agree that many of the mechanics are similar, the over all lore, support, and quality of Warcraft is what sets it apart from SB. The same can be said for Star Trek Online. Again, I know that both WOW and STO have been around longer so they have had more of a chance to iron out any problems they may have. Problems aren’t really my concern here. My concern is does this game have legs?

Leveling from 25 to 29 is so boring that I have ended up turning the game off after less than 45 minutes. The lore provided feels contrived and doesn’t always make sense. I have said it in game many times that the SB method of leveling is “Kill 5 of these monsters, done? Oh, go kill 7 more of them. Done? Oh, well go kill 15 more. Done? Oh, go kill 10 more of the same monster along with another monster you killed while following the same pattern.” It doesn’t take long to figure out that while the game itself might look nice, ultimately you realize that it’s kind of like the pretty blond you went to high school with: really nice to look at, but if you go deeper you realize there is little to no substance. The game has no heart and there is little to no brains behind it. In a lot of ways, it makes me think that the designers were so focused on giving their core demographic boobs that they forgot that they actually needed to build a real game.

For a few players I have spoken to in game, the novelty of the big boobs and nudity is wearing off and I don’t think it will take long before people figure out this game is just a big, dumb blond.

Scarlet Blade – Players Want REAL Patch Notes

Some of you may have noticed that I have not posted nearly as many new Scarlet Blade posts in the past couple of weeks. There have been some, but not as much as a few weeks ago. The answer is simple.

This game may not have the power to keep progressively moving forward.

I am not saying outright that the game will fail. In fact, I wish the opposite. I’d like to see them succeed. There are just so many issues with Aeria and Scarlet Blade at the moment that unless something significant changes, I don’t see how this game can survive in the long run. Here is a look at once of the more glaring issues with the game thus far.

If you go to the forums and search for patch notes, you’re not going to find any for Scarlet Blade. Why? That would probably be a question best posed to Aeria and their development team. After doing a thorough search for patch notes, I was unable to find any after I know for a fact that some were posted. If you go and do a search on your own, you will see that as of today (April 21st, 2013) there are over 60 posts from people asking the same thing I am asking: where are the patch notes? I know some companies post patch notes literally minutes before a server goes down for maintenance. I am not a huge fan of that. In this case, it seems Aeria is doing exactly this. Even then, trying to find a history of those patch notes is seemingly impossible. I remember reading patch notes a few weeks ago right before the servers were taken down so a patch could be applied. I remember a post from “GMLeo,” one of the Aeria employees working on SB. Now, if you were to go looking for those same patch notes, they are nowhere to be found. I admit it’s possible that through all my searching that I somehow missed the patch notes. At the same time, should patch notes be that hard to find? While on the topic of patch notes, I cannot help but question the clarity of the patch notes we’ve received in the past. To give you an idea of what the notes look like, here is what I can remember from the ones I’ve read from Aeria.

Making some changes on a few items.

Altering some sounds.

Adding in a few items.

Changing the description of some items.

I am not exaggerating. This is really what some of the patch notes looked like. The first thing that struck me is can it be possible to be any more vague? Nowhere in their notes did they specifically state that a certain function or a particular item would be updated or fixed. All it states is that there will be changes. Alright, some changes can be good, but just because you change something doesn’t mean it is fixed. Also, what items are we talking about here? What exactly is getting fixed? It seems as if Aeria is purposely not answering these questions. Whenever you get an update from a game or a piece of software, you generally get update or “Patch” notes telling you exactly what happened in the software and why this patch is being implemented. Aeria refuses to provide detailed patch notes, leaving us to wonder what exactly they are supposedly fixing. Here is a grand example of some absolutely terrific patch notes.

April 18

  • Classes
    • Warlock
      • Destruction
        • Fixed an issue where targets of Havoc were receiving more damage than intended from Immolate.
  • Quests
    • Eyes of the Thunder King: Engaging Unblinking Eyes and Focused Eyes will now place all members of the raid in combat, preventing players from releasing when they die.
  • Raids, Dungeons, and Scenarios
    • Throne of Thunder
      • Ra-den
        • Fixed an issue where it was possible to have 2 instances of Unstable Vita active during the Ra-den encounter.
      • Twin Consorts
        • Crane Rush now deals 5 million damage, down from 30 million damage in Raid Finder difficulty.
  • Items
    • Brutal Talisman of the Shado-Pan Assault now grants a reduced bonus of 4400 to Strength, down from 8800 Strength, and the effect duration now lasts 30 seconds, up from 15 seconds when the effect is activated in PvP combat.
    • Tyrannical Primal Diamond when socketed to a bind-on-equip helmet now causes the helmet to become soulbound.
    • Vicious Talisman of the Shado-Pan Assault now grants a reduced bonus of 4400 to Agility, down from 8800 Agility, and the effect duration now lasts 40 seconds, up from 20 seconds when the effect is activated in PvP combat.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Resolved an issue where Capacitive Primal Diamond’s effect was not activating properly.

It’s not hard to tell that these notes are from World of Warcraft. I know some people may argue with my using of WOW as an example. Some will say that Blizzard has been around longer so therefore they have a better grasp on how to implement a patch and how to write patch notes. There is a very simple reason why I am using WOW as an example. In the world of MMO gaming, Warcraft is the gold standard by which all other games are measured. Some of you might disagree with this assessment, but all you have to do it look at their success. You cannot deny that they have taken an mmo and turned more people onto it than any other company on the planet. Sure, they may have changed things to the point where a lot of their original players have left, but that doesn’t change the fact that millions of people still play the game. They make millions of dollars a month and they are still subscription based.

The point here is that if you are going to create and run an MMO, you have to expect to be compared to Blizzard at some point. The patch notes that Aeria is giving the players of Scarlet Blade are, quite frankly, insulting and show a complete lack of capability on their part. It’s no secret that gamers are among the smartest demographics on the planet. Hell, when Cryptic Studios refused to divulge drop percentages from a new box they were putting in Star Trek Online, a handful of people got together and simply ran trial and error tests over and over on their test server and from that, were able to correctly guess the drop rates. It is this type of ingenuity that sets gamers apart from most other consumers. I am not saying we are any better than any other demographic. All I am saying is we are obviously smart of enough to understand detailed patch notes…so why not stop hiding behind purposely vague descriptions and give us what we want?

Stay tuned for more information and updates on Scarlet Blade.

For the Lonely Gamer – A Cuddle Bar!

I found this on a website about various oddities in the world and I thought it was actually really cute!

I’m sure you’re all aware of things like brothels and what they are for. This however is NOT a brothel and actually really interesting and very innocent.

In Japan, you can actually pay to sleep with a woman. No, no. I didn’t say have sex with her. I said SLEEP with a woman. As weird as it may seem, there is a place where, if you choose (and can afford it), you can pay to actually lie down with a woman and go to sleep. Or you can lie there awake with her. Your choice. The idea is that often times men become very stressed and sometimes, instead of a physical release like what you get from sex, simply want someone to be close to. It makes perfect sense, really. Men often do not like to admit that they like to cuddle from time to time, but they do. The fact that the women available from this service are quite attractive is an obvious bonus.

Don’t believe me?

These screen captures are in English as I have the translator active in Chrome. If you can read Japanese, obviously it’s easier to tell what everything says. The website address is soineya.net so feel free to check them out even if you want to look around. With current exchange rates, you get an hour of cuddle time for about $60 USD (6000 Yen). They also offer other options as well for an additional fee such as having her in a specific position or dressing her in something you prefer. Do keep in mind that this is a CUDDLE bar so if you try to get fresh with your cuddle partner, you’ll be asked to leave and you will not get a refund.

Scarlet Blade – Tainted Love Outfit (NSFW, Nudity)

Here are a few shots of the Tainted Love outfit that is ridiculously overpriced in the AP store. Note that these screen shots were taken in Alpha so the outfit will look different on the updated Sentinel model.

BioShock Infinite (Cosplay) – Anna Moleva

A little while back, I featured a picture of Elizabeth from BioShock Infinite as cosplayed by Anna Molena. Well, I had a chance to head over to her deviant art page and had a look. Anyone who is familiar with her knows she cosplays more than just BioShock. If you wwant to take a look at more of her fabulous work, head on over to Anna’s Deviant Art page and have a look around. You will not be disappointed. She also recently started up a Facebook fanpage which you can get to by clicking here. She has all sorts of good stuff on her FB page so be sure to give her a like. You get to see her without all of the cosplay clothing and makeup on. I have to say, even when she’s not all dolled up, she’s a very pretty girl! I am sure all you guys will really get a kick out of her. Show her some love and check her out!
